Pittsburgh Performing Arts Calendar

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and development of Pittsburgh's downtown Cultural District. Check out the event calendar when you hit town! Robbie Klein is a well known musical name in Pittsburgh, and he will be performing June 9, 2009, at 5:00 PM at Katz Plaza.

Keynote Speaker: Deanna Marcum

Deanna Marcum was appointed the Library of Congress Associate Librarian for Library Services in 2003. In this capacity she manages 53 divisions and offices whose over 1,800 employees are responsible for acquisitions, cataloging, public service, and preservation activities, services to the blind and physically handicapped, and network and bibliographic standards for America’s national library. She is also responsible for integrating the emerging digital resources into the traditional artifactual library–the first step toward building a national digital library for the 21st century.

In 1995, Dr. Marcum was appointed president of the Council on Library Resources and president of the Commission on Preservation and Access. Dr. Marcum served as Director of Public Service and Collection Management at the Library of Congress from 1993-95. Before that she was the Dean of the School of Library and Information Science at The Catholic University of America. From 1980 to 1989, she was first a program officer and then vice president of the Council on Library Resources. Dr. Marcum holds a Ph.D. in American Studies, a master’s degree in Library Science, and a bachelor’s degree in English.

Keynote Speaker: Stevan Harnad

Stevan Harnad is a cognitive scientist who was born in Budapest, Hungary. He did his undergraduate work at McGill University and his graduate work at Princeton University's Department of Psychology. He is currently Canada Research Chair in Cognitive Science at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of Southampton. He is also an External Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His research is on categorization, communication, cognition and consciousness.

Dr. Harnad was the founder and editor (1978-2003) of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, a journal published by Cambridge University Press, Psychology, an electronic journal sponsored by the American Psychological Association, and CogPrints, an electronic preprint archive in the cognitive sciences hosted by University of Southampton. He was also the founder and moderator of the American Scientist Open Access Forum (since 1998) and is an active promoter of Open Access. 4605 messages since 1998.

ETD2009 Registration is open!

TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIPS - ETD2009 CONFERENCE

In keeping with the spirit of open access and inclusiveness, the NDLTD offers travel scholarships to delegates in need of financial assistance to attend the ETD symposium. Travel scholarships are awarded based on need and reviewed according to NDLTD Conference Handbook guidelines. Scholarships may cover some or all transportation, registration and lodging costs.

Travel scholarship recipients are typically individuals from U.N. developing regions and/or graduate students and/or awards program winners. Submitting a proposal to present a paper or poster (or willingness to do so) and providing at least some local funding support to supplement the travel grant will increase the likelihood of travel support. A required post-conference survey will be collected to assess the outcomes of delegate attendance.
